Kendall Whittier Neighborhood Tour

Kendall Whittier was a bustling shopping district from the late 1920’s through the 1950’s, but when Highway 244 bisected the neighborhood in 1967, the area struggled to recover.  For the last decade, area leaders and volunteers have worked hard to transform the neighborhood back to its early days as Tulsa’s first suburban shopping district.  Their success was reflected in its being one of the three winners of the 2020 Great American Mail Street Award.

We’ll start our tour at Ziegler Art & Frame, the anchor of Whittier Square since 1973, with an overview of the neighborhood by Trent Morrow, grandson of Trinity Woods member Bobbie Ziegler, who has been very active in the revitalization of Kendall Whittier.  We’ll also have a chance to look around this fascinating store and studio.

Then we’ll head across the street to Circle Cinema to view their latest gallery exhibit, “She is Tulsa” by award-winning photographer Nicole Barton.  35 women from all over Tulsa were photographed to create a photo anthology celebrating the women of today’s Tulsa.  Meant to document the diversity in this changing city, and present a fresh perspective, the work highlights all the best things about Tulsa, while also looking towards its future.

Next, we head down the block to She Brews Coffee House, not just a delightful place to enjoy excellent coffee but also proceeds from your purchase go towards helping women coming out of difficult life circumstances with housing, jobs, and mentorships. We will meet some of these women and hear their inspiring stories while we enjoy coffee and a slice of delicious “She Bread” with honey butter.

We’ll end our afternoon with a tour of the sanctuary of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church led by Father David Medina and heart about this vibrant parish and San Miguel School

RSVP on the weekly Wellness Reservation Form. Cost of this outing is $15 including your choice of coffee (The Classics) or loose leaf tea and a slice of made-from-scratch She Bread and honey butter.
