What to Expect from a Dementia-Friendly Community

By Lupina Fry, Wellness Nurse

According to Dementia Friendly America, a “dementia-friendly community is a village, town, or
community that is informed, safe, and respectful toward individuals living with dementia, as well as their families and caregivers.” It provides supportive options that enhance quality of life. Trinity Woods
became one of America’s dementia-friendly communities in 2019 and has since offered numerous educational and supportive opportunities within the community to keep us moving forward.

So, what can you expect from a dementia-friendly community? Inclusion is key. It begins with listening to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. This involves creating a peaceful and calm environment that is safe and respectful for everyone. The community promotes intergenerational connections and increases social interactions while supporting inclusive decision making as well as providing assistance, when needed.

Physical spaces in a dementia-friendly community are designed with clear signage, adequate lighting, and easy navigation. Dementia-friendly communities also encourage social interaction and engagement by providing shared spaces and activities and promoting participation in events and activities. They also feature quiet areas away from noise to minimize distractions in welcoming and inviting settings.

Community members should be supportive, inclusive, and accessible. They should be aware of what dementia is and offer empathy, acceptance, friendliness, and understanding. Community members must also be patient and welcoming and feel confident when engaging with and assisting individuals living with dementia. It’s important that those living with dementia feel supported and capable. In essence, a dementia friendly community aims to ensure that individuals living with dementia and their families can live fully and meaningfully. This means espousing the dimensions of wellness while also being good neighbors.

But perhaps most importantly, we work to raise awareness among all residents, family members, and visitors about what it means to live with dementia. By encouraging kindness, patience, and community education, we help break down stigma and build a culture where everyone feels they belong.

Being a dementia-friendly community isn’t a checklist—it’s a commitment. At Trinity Woods, we are proud to champion that commitment every day, ensuring that every resident is seen, valued, and supported on their journey.

Summer School Returns to Trinity Woods!

By Bonnie Polak, VP of Philanthropy and Community Engagement

Now in its ninth year, Trinity Woods Summer School is back and better than ever! This cherished annual tradition brings residents together to explore new topics, spark curiosity, and experience the joy of learning in a vibrant community setting.

This summer, we’re offering 14 engaging classes, some spanning multiple sessions, covering a wide variety of subjects. Whether you’re interested in art, science, food, or something completely unexpected, there’s something for everyone.

“When I teach a summer school class, I learn even more than the students do,” says Don Hertzler, retired chemistry professor. “Trinity Woods is a place full of wonderfully active minds. Summer School gives us the exciting opportunity to learn from each other.” Don has taught at least one class in Summer School every year since it began.

Summer School at Trinity Woods isn’t just about education — it’s about connection. These classes create opportunities to meet neighbors, exchange ideas, and experience the mental boost that comes with lifelong learning. They promote not only intellectual growth but also social wellness, as residents gather to learn in a fun and welcoming environment.

This year will feature four first time teachers. One of them is Jeanne Funk. “I thought it would be fun to teach a basic art class that doesn’t require any artistic ability. In our short time living here, I have been impressed by the enthusiasm for learning that everyone seems to have so let’s see what happens.” Jeanne is an artist who also taught art to 7th through 12th graders years ago.

Thanks to the generosity of our resident instructors, whether you’re stepping into a classroom for the first time in years or continuing a lifelong habit of learning, Summer School is your chance to explore something new. Join us for another unforgettable summer of learning, laughter, and discovery at Trinity Woods!

Farm-To-Table at Trinity Woods: Fresh, Local, and Full of Life

In senior living communities, the farm-to-table movement is transforming dining experiences and improving residents’ well-being. By sourcing ingredients directly from local farms—or even growing produce in on-site gardens—these communities are bringing freshness, flavor, and nutrition to every meal.

“Using fresh, local ingredients isn’t just about flavor—it’s about care,” says Chef Tom Farrell, Executive Chef at Trinity Woods. “When we cook with produce that’s just been picked, we’re giving our residents the best in taste and nutrition. It’s a simple way to show them they matter every single day.”

Farm-to-table dining ensures that seniors enjoy seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs at their peak, often harvested just days or even hours before being served. The result is not only tastier meals but also better nutritional value, which supports overall health and vitality.

Beyond the plate, this approach fosters a sense of connection—to nature, to the local community, and even among residents themselves. By embracing farm-to-table practices, senior living communities are creating healthier, more sustainable environments that nourish both body and spirit.

“I have developed a business relationship with Green Farm. They are a local farm that is currently selling at the Tulsa Farmer’s Market. We are looking to purchase from other farmers as well, but I want to begin small, so that we are not overwhelmed with produce that doesn’t get served in our restaurants.” said Farrell.

Marching Forward

By Weldon Tisdale, Chaplain

“If you are not moving forward, the world is passing you by.” John C. Maxwell
“Even if you fall on your face, you are still moving forward.” Victor Kiam
You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward… Just take the next step!

Each day is a new opportunity, a fresh chapter, to witness the beauty of life and the strength of our faith. At times, our past may seem heavy, and the challenges of today can appear daunting. Yet, the timeless words found in Job 17:9 (NLT) remind us of a powerful truth: “The righteous keep moving forward…”

As we step into the month of July and as we celebrate Independence Day, we are reminded of the importance of progress and perseverance. Job 17:9 encourages us to keep moving forward, promising that our righteousness and integrity will lead to increased strength. This scripture serves as a powerful reminder that our journey is one of progress and empowerment. Just as the summer sun continues its journey across the sky, we too are on a path of continuous growth and forward movement.

At Trinity Woods, each day presents new opportunities to grow stronger and more resilient. Whether it’s through engaging in activities, forming new friendships, or simply enjoying the beauty of summer, we are continually moving forward. Like a tree, we are rooted in our values and experiences, and together, we support one another, growing stronger with each passing day.

Life has taught each of us. Your experiences reflect a tapestry of memories: joys, hardships, successes, and setbacks that collectively shape who you are today. Yet, as Job’s words encourage, the journey doesn’t halt here. The righteous are not defined by the trials they encounter but by the determination
to press on despite them. Each morning offers a chance to renew your spirit, to share a kind word, and to contribute your hard-won wisdom to those around you.

The beautiful truth of Job 17:9 (NLT) reminds us that no matter our age or the challenges we face, the righteous always find way to keep moving forward. In our daily lives, we see that living out our faith is about continuous growth, flexibility of spirit, and a willingness to look ahead with anticipation rather
than dwelling on what has passed. Make up your mind to “Keep Moving Forward.”
